Hammer & weighted action keyboards (151)

A lever mechanism with real weight behind each key - the closest a keyboard gets to the resistance of an acoustic piano action. Heavier in the bass, lighter in the treble, and the only class that builds piano technique that transfers to a real instrument.

"Weighted" hides a range of engineering: from entry-level two-sensor hammer actions (Yamaha GHS/GHC, Casio Scaled Hammer) through middle-weight designs (Roland PHA-4 with escapement, Kawai Responsive Hammer) to wooden-key flagships (Yamaha GrandTouch, Kawai Grand Feel, PHA-50 hybrid). The mechanism, not the speaker or the sample, is what decides whether a digital piano feels like a piano.

Who it is for: anyone learning piano, returning players, and gigging pianists who need their technique to survive the switch between instruments. The trade-offs are real - hammer-action boards are heavier, wider and more expensive than the same model with unweighted keys - but for piano repertoire there is no substitute.

FAQ

Do beginners need hammer action?

If the goal is piano, yes - a weighted action builds the finger strength and control that unweighted keys do not. A synth-action keyboard teaches a different instrument.

Is all weighted action the same?

No. Entry hammer actions (GHS, GHC) are lighter and simpler than flagship designs with wooden keys, escapement and per-key sensors. The action is usually the first place manufacturers cut costs.

Does weighted always mean 88 keys?

Mostly, but not always - some stage pianos and controllers come in 61/73-key weighted variants. Check the key count separately from the action.
