Clonewheel organs in the database

A clonewheel is a modern keyboard built to do one vintage job: imitate the tonewheel organ, drawbars and rotary speaker of the classic Hammond era. The originals are out of production and out of reach for most players, so the market is these instruments - Hammond Suzuki itself, Crumar, Viscount, Nord's C2D and the organ models inside the piano brands. We hold 15 of them.

The four families

Hammond (Suzuki) - the name that owns the heritage, now selling digital instruments. Crumar - Italian organ specialists, drawbar-first designs. Viscount - the Legend series, another heritage-conscious maker. Organ modes inside other instruments - a Nord C2D or the organ section of a Dexibell Classico, for players who want the sound without a dedicated board.

What to compare on an organ

Physical drawbars or a screen. Our data records the key count and the action, not the drawbar hardware, so the model pages are where to check: two organs at the same price can differ in whether the drawbars are real.

Weight and transport. Organ players carry their instrument. The weight columns above are the honest comparison, and they are the main reason players choose a smaller clonewheel over a fuller-featured one.

Whether you need a separate board at all. Most of these instruments exist because a piano cannot do the job; if your playing is mostly piano with two organ songs a night, the organ section of a stage instrument is the cheaper route - see the Nord ladder and the Kurzweil and Dexibell pages for instruments that carry both.

Every maker at a glance - the full map of lines, rungs and price bands - is on the model ladders overview.

Frequently asked questions

What is a clonewheel organ?

A modern digital keyboard designed around the tonewheel-organ layout and sound: drawbars, organ keybed and rotary-speaker simulation. This page lists the ones whose specifications our database holds.

Is Hammond still making organs?

Yes - Hammond Suzuki still builds digital organs, and those are the models we list. The vintage tonewheel originals are outside the scope of this database, which covers instruments with published, current specifications.

Do clonewheel organs have weighted keys?

No, deliberately: the organ action is light and non-weighted so that glissandos and rapid playing work. The key action column above shows what each model uses.

Which is the lightest organ in the database?

The weight column answers it per model - the lightest documented instrument is Hammond M-solo (3.63 kg).
