Roland digital pianos: FP to RP to HP to LX
Roland splits its pianos by portability and cabinet, and the prefixes do not overlap: FP is the portable slab, F and RP are the entry cabinets, HP (with the HPi interactive models) is the mid home line and LX is the flagship. Our database holds 49 of them, and the FP line alone runs from 2005 to Jan 2021 - the longest continuous piano ladder we document.
The naming rule
Roland adds an X for a mid-cycle refresh with a new engine or keybed, and the number after the dash tells you the tier inside a line. So FP-30 → FP-30X is not a bigger model, it is a later generation of the same one; our database lists both when the change was large enough, which is exactly when you should compare them before buying used.

What actually changes as you climb
Action family. Roland names its keybeds (PHA-4 and its relatives), and the family changes with the tier - the action column above links to our key action decoder so you can see which models share a keybed across lines.
Amplification. The portable line runs at modest wattage; the flagship cabinets are an order of magnitude above it. Current span across the lines above: 12–13200 W.
Polyphony stops being a differentiator. From the mid rungs up, Roland settles at the same voice count - the money goes into action, amplification and cabinet, not into a bigger number.
Stage models (RD) and synth lines (JUNO, JUPITER, FANTOM, E-A) sit outside this ladder: see the JUNO lineage for the synth side and the Roland brand page for everything we hold.
Every maker at a glance - the full map of lines, rungs and price bands - is on the model ladders overview.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Roland FP, RP and HP?
FP is the portable slab you can carry and gig; RP and F are entry cabinets for the home; HP is the mid home line with a better action tier and stronger amplification; LX is the flagship. All four appear as separate tables above with their documented specs.
Is the FP-30X better than the FP-30?
It is the later generation of the same model, which is why our database lists both. Compare the action, polyphony and connectivity rows in the FP table before choosing between them used.
Which Roland piano has the best action?
The top of the home line carries the highest action tier - see the Key action column in the LX table, and the family names in the key action decoder. Portables trade action tier for weight by design.
Are Roland home models discontinued quickly?
The home lines run in long generations (HP-5xx, HP-6xx, HP-7xx), and older rungs stay on the used market for years. Release and discontinuation years are listed per model; withdrawn ones carry a used-market score.
